Ask Joli: Take Your Look from Day to Night

Q: I often have to attend evening events straight from work. What’s the best way to take my makeup look from day to night? –Megan, Fort Lauderdale, FL

These days, it seems like we’re always on the go. That’s why I designed Pür Minerals to provide quick and easy beauty solutions for all women. Looking your best for work is important, but you also want to be able to dress up your look in a flash for night out on the town. Here are a few tips on how to take your everyday makeup to the next level for an evening of elegance.

1. Let’s start with your skin. Everyone knows that a good foundation is the key to a lasting look, but not everyone knows that a great foundation primer is the key to a perfect looking complexion. Primers are great for setting makeup and evening out skin tone. I love our Colour Correcting Primer in Peach. It neutralizes discolorations to minimize under eye circles, age spots and freckles.

2. Once your skin is primed, apply a lightweight foundation. Pressed formulas generally wear all day into night, since they don’t weigh skin down and clog pores like thicker, liquid foundations. 3. Now onto the eyes. A smoky eye is a fabulous way to transition into a sophisticated evening look. Begin by lightly smudging your eyeliner around the lash line. Our Mineral Eye Defining Pencil with Smudger is perfect for blending. Next, layer a bolder color over your daytime shadow. During the day, I generally wear natural, earthy shades like Champagne Citrine, so before I go out, I like to add a rich, deep hue like Gold Marcasite for a hint of drama.

4. Since your eyes are the focus of an evening look, you don’t want to draw too much attention to your lips. Just apply a coat of neutral-colored or pale-pink gloss to your lips and go. I sometimes like to use our Mineral Lip Tint SPF 15 in Sandy Quartz instead of gloss. It has just enough shine to give my lips a nice finish, and the natural, taupe color doesn’t compete with my dramatic eyes.

So, you spent the summer sleeping in late and slacking off…well, maybe that was just me. But whether you were visiting friends, working hard at your job or traveling the world, the reality is setting in: school is back in session. Here are a few simple beauty tips to help you get back into the swing of things and look great for the school year.

Get into a Routine
The carefree summer months can take a toll on your body and skin. To look and feel your best for fall, you’ll need to get back into your regular routine. That means getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and staying active. This will keep your skin looking radiant and healthy, and help repair any damage that you may have done over the summer.

Your daily skin care routine should consist of washing your face with a gentle cleanser each morning and evening, moisturizing and drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water each day. And just because summer is over doesn’t mean you can skip on the sun protection—always use a daily moisturizer with SPF.

Don’t Follow Too Closely
Sure, you want to be fashionable, but that doesn’t mean that you should follow every trend that’s out there. A neon green skirt paired with zebra print ankle boots is hardly fit for the classroom. The same goes for your makeup. Don’t try to combine too many different looks at once, or you’ll end up a fashion victim instead of a trendsetter.

Instead, pick one trend and work around it. For instance, if you’re going for smoky eyes, opt for nude or berry-stained lips. If you’re going for dramatic red or super-shiny lips, wear soft, natural eye shadow.    

Trim Down
Your hair, that is. Your skin isn’t the only thing that suffers from harsh UV rays. The sun can dry hair out resulting in split ends and bleaching. A short, stylish bob is a great way to revitalize your locks, but if you’re not ready for such a drastic cut, trim off about two inches to keep your hair healthy.

Fall Into Fashion: 2008 Trends

With summer coming to an end, it’s time to pack up your shorts and gladiator sandals and make room for your sleek, sophisticated fall wardrobe. This season is all about a classic pieces with a modern, feminine twist.

Nip Tuck
Think tailored pants and jackets, pencil skirts, collars and cuffs. Dresses and skirts are nipped in at the waste, while hemlines are crisp and straight. The look can be casual, too—it’s more structured and chic than prim and proper. The best part about structured cuts: whether your pants are wide-leg or narrow, a neat, tailored look will lengthen your silhouette and produce a slimming effect.

True Colors
Black will always have top billing for fall, but vibrant, colorful jewel tones of blue, orange, purple and green are making their mark this season. Dresses in autumnal shades like plum and rust are look lovely on nearly every skin tone. For those who may be a little less daring, a strategically placed splash of color will jazz up any ensemble. Try accenting your monochromatic black or gray with a cobalt belt or an emerald scarf.

Mad for Plaid
Nothing says fall like a pair of plaid menswear pants in shades of chocolate and tan. This season, however, designers are updating the crisscross classic with playful, flirty pieces in watercolor tints. Plaid has been adopted by practically every look from preppy to grungy to western, and considering its long and complicated history with the fashion world, it’s safe to say this print isn’t going anywhere soon.

All Tied Up
Bows are putting the finishing touches on clean-cut oxfords, silk blouses and wool coats this fall. The most wearable version is perhaps the thin, gauzy bow accenting an ultra-feminine silk top. The result is a perfectly pulled together look that’s at once romantic and avant-garde. Since bows themselves are accessories, wear the trend with minimal jewelry, especially on the neck.
