Ingredient Close-Up: Vitamin C

While most of us are aware of the internal benefits of vitamin C as an immunity booster and essential nutrient for tissue, bone and eye health, its salutary effects on the skin are just as dramatic and well-documented.

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) plays an important role in the production of collagen—the main protein in the body’s connective tissue and the source of the skin’s firmness and definition. As we age, our natural collagen production rate diminishes, resulting in the lack of definition seen in fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition linked a higher intake of vitamin C to a generally better skin-aging appearance for women between the ages of 40 and 74, marked by fewer, less pronounced wrinkles and improved hydration. When applied topically, vitamin C helps boost collagen production and supplement the skin’s natural deficit, improving skin texture and composition.

As an antioxidant, vitamin C has been shown to improve the skin’s defense against UV damage. Targeting UV-induced free radicals, vitamin C helps prevent inflammation and protect against DNA damage and the signs of premature aging. High-Heeled Boots
For a perfect transition from the office to the evening, choose a boot with a bit of a heel. While stiletto heels are the ultimate in sexy fall footwear, a chunky heel offers more stability and can elongate shorter legs.

Melissa’s Pick: “Zarajoe” by Nine West. I love the leather-suede combination and the fact that the 4’’ heel isn’t too chunky or too skinny. The slight slouch is super-stylish, but looks more refined in black than brown.

Ankle Boots
Although this trendy style is not always the most flattering for every body type—as it tends to make the calves look bigger—ankle boots can provide the perfect accent to a fall wardrobe when worn right. Booties with fold-down collars and lace-up oxfords tend to be more forgiving.

Drink More Water
Proper hydration is an essential part of any workout, and skin fitness is no exception. Aside from moisturizing the skin from within, drinking an ample amount of water (8 - 12 glasses a day) will also help flush toxins and increase circulation and elasticity, leaving skin supple, clear and glowing.

Start Fresh
Just as stretching prepares your body for a jog, cleansing prepares your skin for your beauty regimen. How did you find out about Pür Minerals?
A year ago, last August, I wandered into an ULTA. I was fed up with the products I was using—for various reasons—and inquired about new products. I was introduced to Pür Minerals at that time and fell in love!

What are your favorite Pür Minerals products and why?
I really love the skin care. I believe beautiful skin begins with care, not with paint. Every a.m. I use the Skin Perfecting Serum, Intensive Eye Treatment, Day Renewal Complex SPF 20, Mineral Lip Revival—all spritzed with the Fulvic Mineral Mist. I repeat in the evening, except I use the Mineral Moisture Complex rather than the Day Renewal, cleansing with the Mineral Melt and Revitalizing Wash. What a great spa for your complexion! Consistency will assure you beautiful, glowing skin!

As far as cosmetics goes, my favorite products are: Universal Marble Powder, both Pink and Bronze; Triple Impact Mascara—wonderful lashes; and the 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup. You always look so fresh and natural and that is important to me.

What do you see as the chief benefits of Pür Minerals products?
Most of my life I NEVER used foundation. I love that just a touch of the Pressed Mineral Makeup is complimentary and oh so very light—very natural. The facts are, all of the “paint products” are very natural and easy to apply; you always look fabulous and not clownish. I have observed makeup artists applying the 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup to customers who really need extra coverage, and even then the product is naturally complimentary. I have to give a lot of credit to the wonderful brushes as well. They are the best and make it so easy to professionally apply the products.

How do Pür Minerals products differ from other makeup and skin care brands that you have used in the past?
I love the fact that the products are all natural. When I think of the ingredient possibilities in other products in my history, I cringe. As we enter our “boomer years” we certainly become more aware of and leery of what we eat, what we do, and how best to care for our bodies. I am blessed with great health and want my skin care to be just as cautionary, assuring only the best for me. I must also say, Pür Minerals is a very affordable brand and I appreciate that, too.

Ask Joli: Sculpting Bold, Beautiful Brows

You’ve got questions, Joli Baker has answers. Read on for advice from the Pür Minerals president and get the beauty scoop—pür and simple.

Q: I’ve noticed that thicker eyebrows are in this fall. How can I make my brows look bold and beautiful without looking beastly? –Shane, Charlotte, NC

Gone are the days of pencil-thin arches. This season demands volume! You may have noticed this trend while thumbing through the latest beauty magazines, but in case you missed it, bold brows are in. If you don’t already have one, now is the perfect time to add a 3-in-1 Universal Makeup Pencil to your beauty collection. It adds natural looking definition to eyebrows—plus, it doubles as eyeliner and lip pencil.

Before adding volume, it’s important to make sure your eyebrows are properly shaped. Hold your brow pencil or eyebrow brush vertically along the right side of your nose so it forms a line from where your nose and cheek meet to the inside corner of your eye. Your eyebrow should start where this line crosses the brow line. To find your arch, simply turn the pencil to form a line from the nose position to the outer edge of your iris. Your arch should peak right above it. Turn it again to line up with the outer edge of your eye to find where your brow should end.

Our Mineral Brow Perfection is a multi-tasking eyebrow sculpting tool that creates a natural frame for the eye. I created this product because every woman needs great brows. It consists of a brow shaping wax to form and sculpt eyebrows and a micronized mineral powder to fill in and define brows. The key to using the wax is to brush backwards against the grain to “fluff” the brow. Next, dip your eyebrow brush into the brow powder and fill in brows to the desired intensity. The brow powder actually picks up highlights found in your natural hair, so it never looks fake or drawn on.
