Golden Globe’s Best and Worst Dressed

IStock_000000067375MediumThe stars were shining last night, as the 69th Golden Globe Awards honored film and television’s best and brightest. And while the ceremony itself was fairly tame (barring the odd expletive from bad boy host Ricky Gervais), the red carpet run-up was anything but. Long considered the dress rehearsal for the Oscars, the Globes are where A-listers show off their more adventuresome—and questionable—tastes, and last night was no exception. Here’s your Golden Globe style sum-up—from the most stunning standouts to our favorite five-star fashion disasters.

The Good
The best of the best goes to Angelina Jolie, whose satin Atelier Versace gown harkened to Hollywood’s Golden Age. A splash of scarlet gave the ivory white number a pop of color which the actress perfectly paired in her lip color. Add the best accessory of all (Brad Pitt), and we have a winner.

The Bad
Alright, while maybe not a fashion catastrophe, Lea Michele’s chrome-treated Marchesa gown definitely flirted with disaster.  The shiny, see-through piece looked like Britney Spears’ Toxic outfit met a Bedazzler. And with so much exposed, it’s lucky the Glee star didn’t suffer a costume malfunction.

The Unspeakable
“Dip dying” may sound more elegant than “tie-dying,” but it doesn’t erase its long and embarrassing history as the color choice of camp leaders and hippies worldwide. That didn’t stop Sarah Michele Gellar, however, from gracing the red carpet in a Smurf-blue gown that resembled a painter’s drop cloth.

Going Blonde and Lookin’ Smurfy

Perry-Smurf Katy Perry looked smashing and Smurf-tastic at the New York movie premiere of “The Smurfs” on Sunday night. Perry combined her animated attitude and funky, fashion flair to create a literal display of the character she voiced for the film, Smurfette. This Smurf-Village girl was unforgettable in her white, mini dress with jeweled Smurfette on top. Her sun-kissed hair was so hot it’d melt your popsicle. Seriously, Perry’s new, golden locks definitely turned a few heads.

Perry finished off the fine, fresh, fierce ensemble with a jeweled bangle bracelet, blue-detailed nails, azure stud earrings and  a pair of bright cobalt pumps.

What red carpet (Or should I say blue carpet?) Smurf outfit would be complete without proper makeup? Perry polished her cartoon-inspired look with bold blue eye shadow, heavy lashes and a sweet, pink lip. I think she did a wonderful job bringing the whimsy and fun of the 1980s cartoon alive without going off the costume deep end. Smurfy!

Movie Cosmetics: Twilight Makeup

Shutterstock_1336387 The Oscars may be behind us, but Hollywood isn’t taking a break anytime soon. With summer a mere four months away, movie studios are gearing up for their busiest time of year. As one of film’s biggest franchises puts the final touches on its latest installment, we look back at how it wowed us with its ethereal beauty and haunting enchantment.

Movie magic is about more than just explosions and high-end special effects. It’s also about turning everyday actors into creatures of beauty, legend and lore. This fact was particularly prevalent in the onscreen adaptation of the popular Twilight novels, where makeup artists took on the challenge of creating vampire characters of impossible, otherworldly beauty, using all of the tricks of their trade.

One of the biggest challenges that makeup artists faced in creating the Twilight vampires was in finding the right balance between the pale, undead skin described in the books, and the incredibly perfect beauty of the characters. This was a constant struggle as they walked the delicate line between porcelain perfection and ghastly ghoulishness.

Two weeks were spent experimenting with different cosmetic treatments, in order to see how they looked on the various actors. During this time, a variety of shades, treatments, makeup artists tried several different makeup combinations on each of the characters, then evaluated for accuracy and onscreen attractiveness.

Another major challenge was the location of the movie. Portland, Oregon gets a lot of rain, and with many scenes shot outdoors, makeup artists had to scramble in order to patch up dripping streaks of color with brushes that were often rain-soaked as well.

While blush, powder and eyeliner were important in creating the gothic vampire look, the makeup artists worked with contact lenses that made the creatures seem otherworldly. The character of Edward Cullen was described as having eyes that shifted from topaz to onyx black depending on the ferocity of his hunger, making the creation of impressive eyes one of the most important cosmetic tasks on the set.

Oscar’s Best and Worst Dressed

IStock_000000067375Medium Last night, Hollywood dazzled us yet again at the 83rd Academy Awards. And while the ceremony itself was as glamorous as any in recent history, the red carpet lead-up left us longing for more. This year, more stars chose to play it safe than to take wild wardrobe chances, much to our chagrin. Even the notoriously style impaired (i.e. Helen Bonham Carter) looked relatively tame by past award show standards. To be sure, the star-studded event did offer a few gems, but for those of us hoping for a runaway hit look or a fashion disaster, the view was pretty bleak.

Best Dressed
We loved Natalie Portman’s strapless Azzaro SAG Award gown, but the Oscar-winning Black Swan star and mom-to-be stole the show in a royal purple Rodarte dress and perfectly matched Tiffany jewels. Honorable Mention: While several celebs went red this year, none pulled off the look better than Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway whose vintage Valentino gown left us breathless.

Worst Dressed
When Melissa Leo rolled up in a tinseled Marc Bouwer and someone uttered “Elvis has entered the building,” we thought this category was finished. Then we saw Cate Blanchett. Cate’s lavender Givenchy gown was a bead-bedazzled nightmare with what looked like a port window on the front. Next to her, our faux pas first choice (Leo) looked plainly pedestrian.

The SAG Awards Best & Worst Dressed

Shutterstock_3151462 Last night marked the 17th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. And while the ceremony itself offered few surprises (The King’s Speech took Best Picture and Actor, Natalie Portman received Best Actress), the view from the red carpet left us both bewitched and bewildered. With award season in high gear, Hollywood’s brightest stars took center stage once more with bold statements that paid in spades and some that ended in fashion disaster. Here are our top picks for this year’s best and worst dressed.

Best Dressed
Black Swan costar Mila Kunis took a bold chance with a splashy, strapless Alexander McQueen dress, earning her our fashion top spot. Equally elegant and edgy with its abstract red print, it not only complemented the sultry starlet’s dark features and shapely form perfectly, but also made her stand out from the rest of the red carpet crowd. Noteworthy runner-ups include Glee’s Lea Michele, in a plunging Oscar de la Renta metallic gown, and Mad Men’s January Jones, whose black and gold embroidered Carolina Herrera gown captured the glamour of a bygone era.

Worst Dressed
Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence caught our eye for all the wrong reasons. Clad in a retina-burning, hot pink Oscar de la Renta belted gown, the leading actress nominee looked downright uncomfortable in the all-too-strappy color catastrophe. Nipping at her heels, Winona Ryder drew derision across the board from what others aptly called a “prom dress gone bad.” With its jagged, layered ruffles, the strapless white gown looked like an upturned pinecone from the waist down—a far cry from Ryder’s considerably more flattering ensembles of yore.

Red Carpet "Oohs," "Ahhs" and "Blahs"

IStock_000000067375Medium Though The Golden Globe Awards are about recognizing exceptional actors, writers, directors and  composers in the TV and movie world, what really gets the viewers’ blood pumping are fashion ups and downs on the red carpet! There are varying opinions of the best and worst dressed at this year’s ceremony, but there were some definite hits and misses at the 2011 Golden Globes.

Best Dressed

Beautiful gowns of all colors and hues graced the red carpet, and Angelina Jolie’s emerald, long-sleeved, full length, Atelier Versace dress left everybody green with envy. Anne Hathaway also wore sleeves ‘glee’-fully in her tawny, Giorgio Armana Privé. Mom-to-be Natalie Portman was simply glowing in an adorable Victor and Rolf gown with an empire waist, sweetheart neckline and red rose accent, though how that woman wore Stella McCartney high heels with that baby bump, I’ll never know!

Worst Dressed

There are always a few outfits that need improvement on the red carpet, but I don’t even know where to begin fixing Helena Bonham’s multi-colored, asymmetrical, Viviene Westwood dress with mismatched shoes. Her look left me speechless, but not in a good way. Michelle Williams appeared to go for a youthful look with daisies, like Drew Barrymore did with her iconic, daisy-adorned hairstyle in the late nineties, but Williams completely missed the mark in her daisy-print, Valentino dress.  Lastly, Julianne Moore went over-the-top with her over-the shoulder, hot pink, Lanvin gown with one puffy eighties-like sleeve, one bare shoulder, gold chains and awkward nude shoes.

On The Fence

There were a few looks that received mixed reviews or what I saw as unnecessary insult/praise. The press had a love-hate relationship with Scarlett Johansson’s shimmery, lacey Elie Saab dress and swept-up doo. Maybe they were expecting a more daring and vixen-like look? I think she always looks stunning, and this was no exception. While some people thought January Jones’s bold, revealing, red Versace was super sexy, I must agree with the naysayers. It was unflattering. Others found Christina Aguilera’s form-fitting, nude and black laced/beaded, Zuhair Murad to be a no-no, but I thought she looked va-voom, proudly showing some curves.

Oscars 2010: Red Carpet Fashion Report

While Kathryn Bigelow’s gritty war thriller The Hurt Locker may have swept the Oscar count (including the first ever female Best Director), as far as the red carpet was concerned, it was anybody’s game. From perennial favorites like Meryl Streep to first-time nominees like Sandra Bullock, Hollywood’s hottest stars lit up the night with bold statements and classic sophistication. Here’s a look at some of 2010’s top celebrity standouts.

Best Dressed
Jennifer Lopez is no stranger to taking bold fashion risks, a fact that paid off big on this year’s red carpet. A fashion maven in her own right, J. Lo took to Armani for her Oscar night look and dazzled audiences with an elegantly textured strapless gown in a pale lilac with a long, cascading train.

Most Improved
Two months after being universally panned for her less-than-flattering Zac Posen ensemble at the Golden Globes, Tina Fey stunned the Hollywood set in a glamorous one-strap gown by Michael Kors that featured glittering, jet-black leafing over a form-fitting lacy frame.

Fan Favorite
With her charming wit and all-American-girl good looks, Sandra Bullock has long been a darling of the Hollywood scene. Fresh off of receiving a Razzie for worst actress in All About Steve (in which the good-spirited star poked fun at herself in a tongue-in-cheek acceptance speech), Bullock took home Oscar gold for her role in The Blind Side and wowed the audience in a fitted, metallic silver gown with floral embroidery by Patricia Field.

Oscar-Winning Style

Angelina The stars shone bright Sunday night at the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Here are our picks for leading ladies of the evening.

Angelina JolieAnne-hathaway
Wearing a strapless, sweetheart neckline gown by Elie Saab, Angelina Jolie did not disappoint the crowd outside of Hollywood’s Kodak Theater. Jolie donned a vibrant pair of emerald earrings and cocktail ring to give a punch of color to her signature black frock.

Penelope-cruz Penelope Cruz
Not only did Penelope Cruz take home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” but she earned an A+ in style with this vintage Balmain number.

Evan Rachel WoodEvan-rachel
From her sleek updo to her chic, dark nails, Ms. Wood looked stunning and sophisticated in her haute couture Elie Saab dress. The young star’s striking appearance can only be outdone by her mesmerizing performance in “The Wrestler” alongside Mickey Rourke.

Golden Globes Beauty Buzz

Kate The stars came out on Sunday at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards, gracing the red carpet with a plethora of style and talent. Whether they took home awards or not, these beauties are winners in our eyes.

Donning head-to-toe sparkle, Beyonce (or was it Sasha Fierce?) dazzled onlookers with a sequined gown by Elie Saab, a gorgeous platinum and diamond necklace and an equally brilliant smile.

Freida-Pinto Freida Pinto
Ms. Pinto added a splash of color to the red carpet with her chic, golden gown. The star of the critically acclaimed Bollywood fantasy, Slumdog Millionaire, looked youthful yet sophisticated with a romantic, half-up hairdo.
